Shalom Badze (USAP Community School Class of 2024) decided to focus on restoring the Mabelreign Community Library as part of her Capstone Research. Shalom noticed the stark absence of third spaces for youth in her community, and as an avid reader, she recognised the value of having a welcoming and comfortable library for her community.
Shalom along with community member Spiwe Besa Machodo (volunteer for the community library project), were able to connect with Joana Mamombe (Harare West Member of Parliament), who were eager to support Shalom’s initiative as a means to address the third space needs for youth in her community.

Working together, they have managed to have the Mabelreign library painted, electricity and plumbing fixed, grass cut, and flowers planted. They were also able to purchase a new carpet and new signs. They are now working towards equipping the library with new books.
“I think this project is my testament that some things do not just end in the classroom. The whole point of education is not to hold that diploma or university degree but to use it to make a difference. The way you think should now be changed because you are now a knowledgeable person, you’ve obtained an education, and you have something to show for it...Even as a young person, it is possible to be connected with those in higher power. People are out there and they want to help, you just have to make the first effort.” - Shalom Badze, USAPCS ‘24.
“As the Member of Parliament for Harare West, I believe sustainable development begins with access to ideas. I was deeply inspired by Shalom’s vision to transform the Mabelreign Council Library, a space long overlooked, yet rich with potential. Though worn by time, this library is more than just a building with books; it is a place of creativity, hope, and opportunity. I got involved because the young people in our community deserve a vibrant, inclusive space where they can dream boldly, learn freely, and build meaningful connections. More than anything, I look forward to the smiles of young people in Harare West as they walk into the refurbished library and feel seen, safe, supported, and inspired. I envision the space evolving into a dynamic learning ecosystem, alive with possibility, equipped with technology, and rooted in dignity. This is not just a renovation project; it is an investment in the future of our young people in Harare West and our country, Zimbabwe.” - Joana Mamombe, Member of Parliament, Harare West
“It is my aim to help young people achieve their dreams on how they wish to change the world starting with their local communities. This project will make reading more pleasurable, modern and luxurious. It will also be a great space to connect and relax away from the noise of social media and negative influences.” - Spiwe Machado, Mabelreign Community Member and Library Project Volunteer.

Shalom was able to work on the library project while working as a Teaching Assistant at USAP Community School thanks to the support of Spiwe, Joana, and members of the Mabelreign community. Shalom is now completing her undergraduate degree at Davidson College.
