Welcoming the USAP Community School Class of 2027! Selections Update

This week we completed selections for the Class of 2027 that will be joining the USAP Community School in January 2026. We received 670 applications from across Zimbabwe, and interviewed 103 students. Interviews were conducted in Bulawayo, Gweru, Harare, Marondera, Masvingo, Mutare, and Tongogara Refugee Settlement.

The Selections Process:

12 volunteers read applications, with each application being read by 2 volunteers. Selected Finalists were invited to a Selections Day where they completed academic assessments, as well as participated in an interview. Each finalist was interviewed by 2 Education Matters and/or USAP Community School staff members to allow us an opportunity to get to know the students better.

We are very grateful to volunteers who read applications and interviewed applicants to support this selections cycle.  We are also grateful to the Education Matters' Interns and USAPCS alumni who helped with assessment grading.

47 Students were selected to join us in 2026. These students, through their applications and interviews demonstrated the following four criteria that inform our selections decisions: 

• Academic Excellence - USAP Scholars consistently demonstrate a high level of academic achievement, curiosity, and critical thinking. 
• Demonstrated Leadership Potential - Our students take initiative—in school, communities, or families. We’re looking for bold thinkers with the courage to act and the ability to inspire others. Leadership not based on titles, but about action and vision.
• Strong Ethos of Giving - Service is at the heart of USAP. We looked for students who are already giving back—tutoring peers, caring for family, volunteering in their neighborhoods. 
• Economic Disadvantage - USAP exists to open doors for students with limited financial resources. We give preference to students who would otherwise be unable to complete their A’ levels if not selected due to financial constraints.
